. our susan candiotti joins us with the latest on the investigation. >> and of course the question is, why an attack on this 34-year-old diplomat who had been in the country for about eight years now working at the nicaraguan mission. cesar mercado. and police found not one but two knives. and they weren't found next to his body. they were found in the bathroom of the small studio apartment where the diplomat lived. cesar mercado, apparently one of the knives were a steak knife according to new york police commissioner paul brown. and he says it was found near the bathroom sink and the sink was filled with blood, unfortunately. and the second knife was a smaller paring knife and that was found inside the sink. so why the positioning of the knives? so many questions to be answered here. his body was found just inside the front door. and when the driver came, the door was unlocked. he opened it up, looked inside, saw the body, and immediately called the police. so they have a lot to try to figure out. his throat, indeed, was cut. and they also said that he was stabbed in the stomach. so

. this is a reaction to what another country is doing to us. china is restraining its currency unilaterally. i wish they were not. i wish they were allowing their currencies to more liberally fluctuate with its true accommodating value. but if they can act unilaterally to hold down their currency, to make their goods seem more expensive for us to purchase, then we have the right to act in our best interests, whether it is unilateral or not, to respond. that way we can give our workers and businesses a fair chance to compete. i did not know if i can ask you a question, mr. secretary, it because you have done remarkably good job of trying to explain how important this relationship with china is. i believe you're trying to speak not just to us and the american people but to the chinese as well. i hope that some of us are able to speak to you and to communicate to the chinese people and government to say that this is not about trying to get on the case of the chinese. we have seen this picture before. we did it over a century ago. people are wondering where we came from when we became number one. i thi

. i'm bret baier. supporters of the u.s. military policy against openly gay personnel scores a major victory today. but half a world away, american service members mourn the loss of several u.s. troops in a tragic accident. as a nato helicopter went down in southern afghanistan, making this the deadliest year in almost nine-year war. reporter conor powell has details from from kabul. >> reporter: helicopter crashes are fairly common in afghanistan, most due to mechanical failure and sometimes weather. in the past, taliban hit and brought down u.s. and international helicopters. in this case, the military says there are no reports of enemy fire in the area when the helicopter went down. they're discounting taliban claims they shot down the helicopter. the helicopter went down in an area that was a violent and nasty part of afghanistan where the taliban do roam free and are very, very strong. in addition to the nine u.s. troops killed, three other people including a u.s. civilian were also injured. today's deaths bring the total number of foreign troops killed to 529, a single-year rec

on cell phone use be behind the wheel be on the way? we'll take a look at all that stuff this morning and developing right now, nbc news confirmed that nine u.s. troops are dead after a predawn helicopter crash in afghanistan. jong yang is live in kabul. >> that's right, thomas. the taliban quickly made phone calls to news organizations, including nbc news, here in kabul to claim responsibility. to say that they shot this helicopter down. the military says not so. they say there was no reports of, no reports of any enemy fire before the crash, before the helicopter went down. the taliban often exaggerates its role and claims responsibility for things that actually turn out to be accidents and, actually, most helicopter crashes here in afghanistan have turned out to be accidents. maintenance issues, also the dust that fills the air here just grinding up the helicopters and their rotors. this was in zabul province. a province in southeastern afghanistan. an area where the taliban is in control of a lot of the territory. it's next to kandahar province and a name people are more familiar.

why? what would you do? 360 md sanjay gupta introduces us to the "the disease detectives" solving medicine's toughest mysteries. this is part one 06 a week-long series. we begin "keeping them honest" with christine o'donnell and how she spent money. last week after searching, we learned that the nominee from u.s. senator from delaware had checks and expense records that didn't seem to add up, apparently spending campaign money on personal expenses after the campaign was over which would be a violation of federal election law. for instance, take a look. this check for $475, mrs. o'donnell labeled it for mileage reimbursement but written three months after her last campaign ended. or $600 for her utility bill, paid to delmarva power. again, the campaign was over. more checks have surfaced including campaign money paying for her home and money going to the her former boyfriend who bought the home when she couldn't make the payments. ms. o'donnell said she hadn't done anything unethical. she's not talking. you'll see what happened when gary tuckman tried to talk to her. this weekend s

for bringing us all together to talk about these very important issues. i have been asked to talk about racial profiling in the context of emigrants. there have been many waves of american history in which there have been anti-democrat laws and policies, but that the federal and state and city level. starting about five years ago, there has been a more recent wave, and states and cities across the country started proposing and enacting laws that were essentially designed to make life very hard for emigrants and to try to drive them out. in the last five years the state legislators have enacted reject proposed thousands of anti- immigrant laws. -- who have proposed thousands of anti-democrat loss. one of those mentioned here was the pennsylvania law, which is a law that prohibited undocumented immigrants from granting and restricted employment as well. there have been similar laws all across the country in places like farmers branch, texas. riverside, new jersey. in arizona, which is a very active state in this regard, is not the first and will not be the last. several years ago arizona passed

, savannah. this was the worst helicopter crash in about four years for u.s. troops. nine troops dead. this happened in zabul province, which is in the south-southeastern section of afghanistan. an area where the taliban controls much of the territory and where coalition forces have been stepping up their attempts to push the taliban out. we are told this crash happened about 4:00 this morning, local time. the military says that there were no reports of enemy fire. that the crash is still under investigation. now, despite the fact that there were no reports of enemy fire, the taliban has called news organizations, including a call here at nbc news in kabul, to claim responsibility for the attack. they say they shot the helicopter down. the taliban often does that, claims responsibility for things that turn out to be accidents. and indeed, most of the helicopter crashes here have turned out to be accidents. maintenance problems, the incredible amount of dust in the air. this is the deadliest year for coalition forces. after today's crash, 525 coalition forces have died this year. 351 o
